Mike Arzt is Co-Owner of The Public Works in Denver, Colorado. The Public Works is a design, fabrication, and multimedia marketing firm that allows your company to craft an authentic presence to your target audience by combining marketing/sales knowledge with engineering and manufacturing expertise.
Mike has an in-depth business knowledge of branding, development, athletes, and imagery that helped form The Public Works. His artistic eye has allowed him to travel the world creating images for both editorial and commercial use.
What made Mike go off on his own?
He always felt like he has been on his own or wanted to be on his own.
For Mike, the entrepreneurial journey has always been there. At 12 years old, he started a landscaping business to raise money to buy his first snowboard.
Having freelance clients slowly evolved into launching The Public Works.
Realizing the Start of Public Works (4:00)
Mike started to freelance quite a bit more by shooting on the side and writing for magazines.
He already had a little momentum going on the freelance side. And that he already had his own gear, and not having a job anymore was a great way to become his own boss.
Mike learned a lot working for other companies and built up his network and skills.
When The Public Works started, he had his freelance clients who ranged from photography to team management, and marketing / consulting. While Frank had engineering and design clients. They both eventually found themselves in Colorado together.
The clients and the work they were doing was the driving factor that led to the birth of The Public Works.
Shifting Mindset with Growth of Business (17:51)
The Public Works is still self-funding and growing organically. As business ramps up, then they ramp up their staff to handle it.
Their crew is everything. That's always the thing they’re trying to handle the most is making sure that they’re really taking care of their core team.
It’s important that he looks to make sure that people are on a growth trajectory.
He likes consistency. He hopes that people stay with them and are happy.
Finding New Clients (20:58)
For Mike finding new clients is a result of the work that he does and a lot of word of mouth.
When it comes to new clients and growth, Mike feels that it is hard to forecast what the future growth would be, currently, their growth has been organic.
He has some great relationships with clients and is very lucky that they tell other people nice things about him.
Mike is looking at some amazing prospects for 2019, this has resulted in cold calling the front desk of potential clients and just not taking no for an answer.
He knows who he wants to work with and he tries really hard to generate those leads. However, their existing clients are by far the most important to him.
Mike’s Book Recommendation
The Alchemist is the magical story of Santiago, an Andalusian shepherd boy who yearns to travel in search of a worldly treasure as extravagant as any ever found. From his home in Spain, he journeys to the markets of Tangiers and across the Egyptian desert to a fateful encounter with the alchemist.
The story of the treasures Santiago finds along the way teaches us, as only a few stories have done, about the essential wisdom of listening to our hearts, learning to read the omens strewn along life's path, and, above all, following our dreams.
